Natural Newborn Photo Poses In OKC

Posted in Newborn Photography, Portfolio by Charis Elisabeth

When parents start thinking about what will happen during their OKC newborn photo session, they often picture the very posed studio images they’ve seen online. The froggy pose, babies folded up into tiny positions, or perfectly styled setups with matching wraps and backdrops come to mind.

And yes those images can be beautiful but I’m pretty serious about believing your session and newborn photo poses should feel honest, natural and connected.

Of course I want your baby to look beautiful, but more than that, I want your photos to make you feel something years from now. When you are 80 years old looking back through these images, I want you to feel instantly transported back to that season. Where you don’t just remember what what your baby looked like, but also what they felt like.

Why I Don’t Do Heavy Studio Style Newborn Posing

One of the biggest differences in my sessions is that I don’t do highly posed studio newborn photography. I don’t believe newborn sessions need a giant collection of props or elaborate setups to be meaningful. I don’t bend or fold babies into complicated positions to make my photos.

My goal is always for babies to look safe, comfortable, and natural so that is why I focus on documenting the things babies already do. Their stretches you can’t just get enough, the yawns, how they curl into your chest, and the way they settle when they hear your voice.

That’s the kind of newborn photography that pulls those heart strings years later and instantly takes you back.

How I Guide You For Natural Newborn Photo Poses

Sometimes when parents hear “natural newborn photography,” they worry that means they’ll be left awkwardly standing there trying to figure everything out on their own. Do not fear my friends, absolutely not!

I help with hand placement, fix flyaway hairs, adjust babies when needed, and help everyone settle into positions that feel comfortable and connected. The difference is that instead of forcing stiff poses, I guide you into movement and interaction that already feels natural.

You get to focus on loving on your baby and soaking it all in. I get to document all the little in-between moments that happen naturally while you do it.

Baby-Led Newborn Posing Creates the Most Natural Photos

We all know every person has a different personality and that’s the same for babies too! Some babies are sleepy and curled up the entire session. Sometimes babies need all the extra snuggles and feeding breaks. Some babies love being swaddled immediately, while others want their little hands free for a while first.

And that is why my sessions are completely baby-led. If baby needs to eat, we pause and feed baby.

If baby needs a diaper change, we stop for a diaper change. There is never pressure for your baby to “cooperate” or perform during the session.

Before your session, I send over several simple tips that help us get the best possible start while still keeping everything relaxed and realistic.Usually we begin the session with baby loosely dressed or wrapped so we can photograph all those tiny details first. The flaky little toes, the wrinkly feet, the fingers stretching open, and all the things that change so quickly in those early weeks.

Then about halfway through the session, I will swaddle baby more snugly so they can settle into that sleepy, cozy stage for the remainder of the session. Over the years, I’ve learned plenty of little tricks that help babies settle naturally if they become fussy, and we always move at a pace that keeps everyone calm and comfortable.

Safety Is Always My Priority

One thing that is very important to me during newborn sessions is safety. If highly posed studio newborn photography is what you are hoping for, I always encourage parents to make sure their photographer is appropriately trained and experienced in newborn safety.

Many popular newborn poses actually require composites and hands supporting baby the entire time. For example, poses like the “froggy pose” should be created with an assistant supporting baby and later edited together as a composite image. Babies also should never be left unattended in buckets, props, or elevated setups.

Newborn safety should always come first. My natural approach avoids positions that may put unnecessary strain on baby and instead keeps baby where most newborns feel safest and most content: close to their parents.

Your baby gets to stay cozy, connected, and comfortable and for the most part stays in everyone’s favorite place: their parents arms.

Instead of stiff portrait poses, I focus on documenting the natural reality of your life with a newborn. I want to capture the into between moments like:

  • Tiny toes resting in your hand
  • Baby curled up against your chest
  • Fingers wrapped around dad’s thumb
  • The way your toddler proudly leans in close to their new sibling
  • Mom swaying gently near the nursery window
  • Yawns, stretches, milk-drunk sleepiness, and all the little in-between moments

Because on gallery delivery day, my goal is that you have photos that will help you remember your baby exactly as they were. And how madly in love with this little on you are.
