Sunshine, the grass getting green, blossoms…hello it’s spring! As the world comes back to life, it is hard not to want to be outside. Sunshine on your face, kids running in the grass, everything feeling fresh again with a cup of ice coffee in your hand. (or at least for me!)

If you love outdoor photos, spring in Oklahoma City is a great time to schedule your session. Life often feels a little lighter before summer schedules fill up, and the weather is usually more comfortable for both kids and parents. Many locations also aren’t crazy busy and

Did You Know Location Plays a Big Role in How Your Photos Look

One thing many people do not realize is how much your location affects your photos, especially in the spring.

Oklahoma turns very green this time of year. Sometimes almost neon green. That can create color casts depending on the time of day and the surroundings.

This is why it helps to talk through your location with your photographer. Some spots photograph more softly, while others reflect a lot of green onto skin tones. Choosing the right time and place makes a big difference in how your final images look.

A Fresh Color Palette for Your Home

A super fun part about spring photos in Oklahoma City is that it brings a completely different color palette and feel than fall sessions.

In the fall we want that warm and cozy feel but spring? We are ready to open those windows, let in the breeze, dance and play. So soft greens, pastel tones, blooming trees, and gentle evening light create images that brighten a space.

If you like updating the frames in your home or adding new photos as your family grows, spring sessions are a simple way to refresh your space. A few lighter images can shift the feel of a room without changing everything else. And a fun way to keep incorporating your family seasonally in your decor in a natural way.

5 Tips for What to Wear for Spring Photos

1. Choose Colors That Complement the Green

With everything so vibrant outside, your clothing should balance the background rather than compete with it. If you’ve ever done any art classes this will feel a bit familiar. Think pinks, neturals, colors opposite green on the color wheel.

2. Outfit and the location

Your outfit should work with your setting. You don’t want to blend in like a toad on a leaf but you also don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb from the background. So if you are in a field or garden, softer tones will blend beautifully. If you choose a more urban or industrial location, you can lean into slightly bolder colors for contrast.

3. Always Add Layers

Layers are one of the easiest ways to make outfits feel put together without extra effort. This is one of my favorite parts of family photos. I love how just adding a bow or cute shoes can make or break it for the whole family!

A few different way to do this:

  • A light sweater or cardigan
  • A denim jacket
  • Hair bows or simple accessories
  • Mixing textures across family members

Layers also help create variety in your photos and give us flexibility during the session. And honestly, with Oklahoma spring weather, layers are just practical. It might be warm, it might be chilly, sometimes both in the same evening. Having options makes it easy to adjust without too much stress on the day of the session.

4. Lean Into Light, Airy Fabrics

Flowy dresses, soft cottons, and light layers work really well in spring. Clothes that have movement always make you feel and then that follows that you are more relaxed for your photos. These pieces move easily and help create that soft, fresh feel that fits the season.

5. Stick With Proven Color Palettes

Some color combinations consistently photograph well for spring photos in Oklahoma City, the following tones pair well with blooming trees and fresh grass without overwhelming the image.

  • Soft pastels like blush, light blue, sage green, and soft yellow
  • Creamy whites and neutrals
  • Soft denim
  • Muted earth tones

6. Skip Neon and Busy Patterns

There really is a difference between bright and neon. Neon colors “glow” and tend to reflect onto skin and pull attention away from faces. Too many busy patterns can make the photos feel crowded so I always recommended choosing one pattern for every 2 solids in the photos. Occasionally you can mix a few patterns and add in more but that’s a great rule to think of.
