The ultimate guide to a lifestyle newborn photo session in OKC.

Posted by Charis Elisabeth

Welcoming a new baby is one of the sweetest, hazy, joy-filled seasons of life. I’m a mama of 3 and each time I’m amazed at how quickly it does by even if in the moment it doesn’t always feel like it! Capturing this time through a lifestyle newborn session gives you images you’ll treasure long after the newborn stage has passed.

If you’re wondering what to expect, this guide to a lifestyle newborn photo session in Oklahoma City will walk you through everything—from booking to receiving your final gallery—so you can feel confident and at ease.

As a lifestyle Oklahoma City newborn photographer serving Edmond, Oklahoma City, and the greater metro, my approach is relaxed and natural. You don’t need a perfectly curated home. Instead, I focus on honest, connected moments that show the love you already share.

Before Your Newborn Photography Session: Booking & Preparing

How do I book a newborn photography session?

The first step is to reach out to a photographer whose work and style you love. When you contact me, I’ll share more details and help you secure your spot with a retainer and agreement. We’ll place your session on my calendar based on your due date, and then finalize the exact photo session date after your baby arrives.

Once booked, you’ll get access to my full library of newborn client resources. These include guides on:

  • What to wear for your session (sneak peek here)
  • How to prepare your home for an in-home newborn session
  • What to expect during the session

And, of course, you’ll also have direct access to me. Unsure about outfits, worried about toddlers or pets, or not sure what rooms to use? I’ll help with all of that.

What are the best rooms for a lifestyle newborn session?

The short answer: wherever the light is. I bring lighting with me, so we can work in most spaces, but natural light always adds an extra touch. Don’t worry if you don’t have a nursery or a pinterest like house, meaningful photos can happen in just one small corner and a window.

Popular rooms we might use include:

  • Living room
  • Master bedroom
  • Nursery
  • Kitchen
  • Backyard

What time of day is best for newborn photos at home?

Mid to late morning is usually the best time. Most homes have the best lighting then, and babies are often happiest earlier in the day. Late afternoons can be tricky with fussy babies and tired toddlers.

When should you set your newborn photo session date?

Once your baby arrives, let me know as soon as you can. I’ll send over date options so you can choose what works best for your recovery and your family’s rhythm. Always take into consideration how much recovery time you might need. And I usually have flexibility that I would rather you schedule your session earlier so we can move it later if you need it.

Here’s a general timing guideline:

  • 1–2 weeks old: Sleepier babies, tiny details, fewer blemishes
  • 3–4 weeks old: More awake time, you may feel more recovered, lots of baby acne 🙂
  • 5–6 weeks old: Baby is alert and expressive, still in that sweet newborn phase but not as much chance of sleepy photos

The Day of Guide for Your Lifestyle Newborn Photo Session

How do I prep for my home newborn photo session?

Keep it simple. There’s no need for a spotless home—just clear clutter with a laundry basket, tuck it away, and call it good. Some day-of tips:

  • Keep stimulation low (skip errands or appointments the morning of your session.)
  • Keep the morning as calm as possible
  • Make sure everyone eats before the session (and snacks are handy! Mini Marshmallows are an excellent reward to have on hand for during the session.)

What happens when I (the photographer) arrive?

I’ll slip off my shoes, sanitize, and take a quick tour of your home. Together, we’ll decide which rooms work best for light and comfort.

What happens during the session?

I’ll gently guide you with prompts and natural posing to keep things relaxed. We’ll focus on connection, snuggles, and little details that tell your story. I love when my newborn photo clients make a coffee and after we get the more formal photos, chill out and we capture a raw authentic reality.

After the session

I’ll head home with your gorgeous photos to carefully select and hand-edit the best images in my true-to-life color style. Within three weeks, you’ll receive an online gallery with a slideshow set to music. I recommend watching it together as a family so you can take in all the beauty of your life.

What to Do With Your Newborn Photos

You know have these delightful photos in and one things about photos – they are meant to be seen and shared. Don’t let your photos live just in a cloud! Print them so you can enjoy them (and boost your child’s self esteem!).

Some of my favorite ways to share those photos are:

  • Framed prints: display in your home or gift to grandparents
  • Albums: flip through and reminisce as your baby grows
  • Wall galleries: create a space in your home that tells your family’s story
