Location Spotlight: Mount Scott Maternity Photos At Wichita Wildlife Refuge
Posted by Charis Elisabeth
If you’re looking for maternity photos that feel adventurous, Mount Scott at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is one of the most stunning and iconic locations in Oklahoma. Just an hour and a half from OKC, this area is filled with rugged beauty, wide open skies, and quiet spaces that make photography sessions feel both intimate and unforgettable. It is one of our favorite quick getaway places to enjoy nature in OK. And as an Oklahoma City maternity photographer, I love helping families plan sessions here because the mix of mountain views, grassy fields, and lakes gives us so many unique backdrops.

Planning Your Maternity Session at Mount Scott
Due to the drive with Mount Scott being 60-90 minutes from Oklahoma City, it’s important to account for travel when planning your session. Game wardens close the mountain right at sunset, so as your photographer I plan ahead knowing how much time we need at the various locations and include the drive time. The top of the mountain has beautiful views but also a lot of wind, so I always recommend bringing an outfit that moves well in the breeze.
What is the best time of day for photos on Mount Scott?
Golden hour is the best time for Mount Scott maternity photos. For morning golden hour you want to be out there right at the crack of down. Then for evening the light at the top of the mountain is strong until the last half of golden hour, so I like to start in the fields below where we can enjoy golden grasses, open skies, and a softer glow before heading up the mountain. (Just flip it for morning golden hour!) Don’t forget to count in drive time up and down the mountain.

Location Variety at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
The beauty of the refuge is that you don’t have to limit yourself to the mountain. There are small lakes, wildflower fields in spring, and open prairies that all give a different feel to your maternity photos. We can mix and match locations depending on your vision.
Add extra fun and make it a little getaway.
One of our favorite things is to turn a trip out to the Wichita Mountains into a mini trip. Medicine Park and Lawton nearby have several cute Airbnbs, local coffee shops, and restaurants that make it the perfect overnight stay.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Session at Mount Scott
Your outfit choices add so much to the look and feel of a photo session. With so many locations types at the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, I recommend bringing at least 2 outfits. (fyi for my clients – I bringing a pop – up changing tent to make outfit changes easy!) All clients get style guidance and support but here a few tips to help:
- Casual and Comfortable: jeans, a simple top, or an outfit that shows your baby bump.
- Dressy and Whimsical: a flowy dress that catches the wind and adds texture and beauty.
- Neutral or Light Tones: colors like soft blues, creams, or pastels look beautiful against the prairie grasses and mountain backdrop.

Golden Hour Oklahoma Mount Scott Maternity Photo Session
This sweet couple came out for their maternity photos on a gorgeous summer evening. We started in the green fields below the mountain with golden grasses and soft sunlight. The mama wore a beautiful light blue dress that complemented the scenery perfectly. As the sun dropped lower, we headed up to the top of Mount Scott where the wind picked up and added the perfect touch of movement to the session. The final images were ones to be cherished of such a special sweet time of life.
