OKC Maternity Photos At Home

Posted in Maternity Photography by Charis Elisabeth

I am so excited to share this beautiful session of OKC maternity photos at home. When families reach out to me as an Oklahoma City maternity photographer wanting a session, it makes me so happy.

This sweet family was joyfully anticipating their second baby, and we spent a Saturday afternoon pausing to celebrate this new life God was blessing their family with. There is something about being in your own home that naturally slows things down and I love how this allows the session to feel relaxed and meaningful.

Why Maternity Photos Matter More Than You Think

Maternity photos can sometimes feel like something that is easy to skip, especially when you are tired or not feeling quite like yourself.

I know how it feel like pregnancy is lasting forever, but in reality, it is a very small part of your life. It is a meaningful and full season, but one that passes more quickly than it feels in the moment. Taking the time to document this stage gives you something tangible to look back on later and remember what it actually felt like to be waiting for your baby.

These photos hold the anticipation, the quiet moments, and the sense of change that is coming, all of which are easy to forget once life shifts into the newborn stage.

Why Choose OKC Maternity Photos at Home?

There is something especially meaningful about choosing to do your maternity photos at home because your space already holds your life.

Your home is where your routines happen, where your family gathers, and where this new baby will soon be welcomed. Photographing your maternity session here allows you to document not just this season, but also the place where your family is living it.

For families with toddlers or young children, OKC maternity photos at home can make the experience feel much smoother. The session can follow your child’s natural rhythm, allowing for snack breaks, playtime, and movement without the pressure of working around outdoor lighting alone. This often helps everyone feel more relaxed, which really does show up in the photos. (I speak from my own personal experience here! As a mom, not just a photographer!)

At home sessions are also a great option during winter or unpredictable weather, which we know Oklahoma is well known for. You can stay comfortable while still getting beautiful, light filled images.

They also offer something a little different from outdoor sessions. The overall feel is quieter and more personal, reflecting your everyday life in a way that is hard to recreate anywhere else.

How to Prepare for OKC Maternity Photos at Home

Step one of course is reaching out and booking your session with your photographer. Many photographers, myself included, truly enjoy at home sessions because they allow us to create something more personal and tailored to your space. I also offer maternity and newborn session packages, which can make planning ahead feel easier during a busy season of life.

Once your session is booked, it can be helpful to take a moment and think through which areas of your home feel most meaningful to you and what spaces have the most light. This might be your bedroom, the nursery, the living room, or even a hallway. Choosing spaces that matter to your daily life helps your photos feel more connected and intentional.

When it comes to what to wear, I always recommend leaning into a comfortable and natural look for in home sessions. Soft dresses, cozy knits, or simple pieces that feel like you tend to photograph best. This mama did such a beautiful job balancing comfort with a slightly elevated feel. I provide styling guidance for all of my clients, along with access to a client closet for those who would like help selecting something that works well in photos.

Preparing your home does not need to feel overwhelming. A quick tidy and clearing of clutter in a few main areas is more than enough. Opening curtains to let in natural light makes a big difference, and focusing on one or two rooms is usually all we need. You might be surprised by how many spaces work well, as I often use unexpected spots when the light is right.

How to Prep Siblings for a Maternity Photo Session

Preparing toddlers and siblings for a maternity session at home is an important part of getting ready. For the style of sessions I photograph, I always encourage parents not to pressure their children to perform. The goal is not perfectly posed smiles, but rather creating space for your kids to be themselves and to connect with you in a way that is natural and honest.

One of the most helpful things you can do is prepare them emotionally ahead of time. Talking about the session in a positive and simple way helps them understand that it will be a time to play, snuggle, and spend time together. When children feel included instead of managed, they tend to settle into the experience much more easily.

Giving them extra attention before the session begins can also help. Slowing down together, reading a book, or simply being present with them allows them to feel secure and ready. Keeping expectations flexible and allowing space for movement or breaks will also help the session flow more smoothly. Put several favorite songs on a playlist to have handy so we can break out the dance party when needed.

This season is a big transition for siblings as well. A new baby is coming, routines are shifting, and they are learning how their place in the family is changing. A maternity session can be a meaningful way to pause and focus on them too, giving them space to feel seen and included before everything changes.
