I’m so excited to share this golden hour photo session with a family of six at one of OKC’s most iconic spots – the Wheeler District.
There’s so many things about the Wheeler District that make it such a fun backdrop for family photos. It offers colorful row houses, skyline views, and of course, the riverside Ferris wheel. I had so much fun capturing this sweet family of six for a relaxed session full of activity, laughter, and just a little bit of wind (thanks, Oklahoma!).
With four energetic kiddos, I leaned hard into play and activity for this session. Whether it was Red Light, Green Light, taking turns riding on Dad’s shoulders, or energetic group hugs, I kept the session moving and fun. After all, as a mom of 3, I know that kid’s attention spans don’t last long. This session highlighted what I always emphasize to my clients–that the best photos happen when you let go of “smile and pose” and just focus on being together and having fun.

Are you allowed to take photos at the Wheeler District in OKC?
Yes! the Wheeler District is a public area and allows photos to be taken around it. It offers a lot of different spots with great backdrops for everything from family photos to individual senior photos. It is important to be respectful of private property when taking photos in the Wheeler Distric—stay on public sidewalks and avoid yards or porches. I’m so grateful we can use this fun place and it is definitely one of my favorite spots for family photos in OKC.
What time is best for a session at the Wheeler District?
Golden hour is always my favorite time for photos and works really well at the Wheeler District. The sun sets behind the row houses, which makes for beautiful evening light and color. Sunrise sessions can also be lovely at the Ferris wheel, with the sun rising behind it. Do note that weekend nights can get busy with events at the District, so I usually recommend checking their public calendar and scheduling weekday sessions when possible. The Ferris wheel does close during the winter, so keep that in mind also when scheduling a photo session.
