7 tips for How to Dress little Boys for photo Sessions

Getting everyone styled and dressed for family photos can always feel like quite the feat! If you are a boy mom, you have probably wondered at least once how to dress little boys for family photos.

The good news is this: Dressing young boys for a photo session is much easier than you think. You do not need suspenders, bowties, or anything fussy. As an Oklahoma City Family photographer I’m here today to share some tips I have found that make picking out outfits easier for their little boys.

Why Dressing Boys for Family Photos Is Easier Than You Think

Keep It Simple

A classic formula works every time for how to dress little boys for family photos (and big boys too for that matter!). Seriously can’t go wrong with clean, nice pants and a simple henley tee. If it is cold, add an overshirt or lightweight jacket. This look works for boys of all ages, from toddlers to big kids. It feels natural, photographs well, and does not distract from your family’s connection.

You really cannot go wrong with:

• Layers will always make something look styled without much work: An overshirt, jacket, flannel, or button down layered on top. They also allow flexibility during the session. We can remove a layer for variety without changing the entire outfit.
• Choose textures rather than patterns
• Keep it comfy. Tight, itchy clothing will automatically make a little one grumpy something you don’t want for photos!

Pockets – My secret for posing boys in photos.

If you are raising boys, you already know hands can be a challenge during photos. Pockets give them something natural to do. Tucking hands into pockets or resting thumbs there instantly helps them feel more relaxed and less awkward. When possible, choose pants or shorts with usable pockets. It really does makes a difference.

Neutral Colors Keep Things Balanced

Neutrals are your always your best friend and so easy to find for boys. Creams, tans, olive, gray, and muted tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family rather than the clothing. If one family member is wearing something patterned, balance it with solids on the others.

Skip Logos, Characters, and Neon

Large logos, cartoon characters, and neon colors pull attention in photos. Even if they seem small in person, they can stand out strongly in images. Clean, simple clothing always photographs better and feels more timeless later.

Don’t forget to think about shoes.

Tennis shoes can work in certain settings, but in most cases, a simple leather shoe, boot, or sandal pulls everything together in a subtle way. You may not notice shoes immediately in photos, but they quietly elevate the entire look. Tennis shoes are super hard to get to look clean so a different choice is often better.

You do not need anything expensive. You just need pieces that fit well and coordinate with the rest of your family. Some of my favorite places to find simple, well fitting pieces for boys include:

When in Doubt, Ask Your Photographer

If you are unsure, send outfit options to your photographer. I always tell my clients to text photos of what they are considering. Sometimes a small swap, like changing a shirt color or adding a layer, makes everything come together.

My Pro Tips for Session Day

As a family photographer with years of experience here are a few extra tips I have found helpful for photo day:

• For younger boys, especially toddlers, wait to dress them until you arrive at the session location. Car rides and snacks can do a number on clean outfits.
• It is also wise to bring a simple backup outfit. Even if you never use it, having it gives you peace of mind.
