Bringing a new baby home is beautiful and life changing, and as an Oklahoma City newborn photographer I love celebrating that season with you. But within the first few days to week or maybe a few months later, it can also feel heavy in ways you may not have expected. Studies show that 1 in 5 women experience postpartum depression or anxiety, yet many go months without realizing what they are walking through. Sleepless nights, changing hormones, and the weight of new responsibility can make it hard to feel like yourself.
I know this personally. When my first child was two months old, I was hit with extreme postpartum anxiety. At first I chalked it up to her NICU stay and the difficult end of my pregnancy. While that played a part, the truth was that I had undiagnosed postpartum anxiety. It continued to get worse until I started receiving support and learning how to work through it. That help made all the difference.
While I had been prepped for postpartum depression, I had not received info or known that postpartum mental health struggles can flare up in many different ways: postpartum anxiety, postpartum rage, postpartum depression and so on.
Taking care of your mental health in the first year is just as important as caring for your body. When you have support for your mind and heart, you have more space to enjoy your baby and to feel steady in this new season. Here in Oklahoma City there are postpartum mental health support therapists and services who understand what new moms are going through. Reaching out for help is not a weakness. It is a brave and healthy choice. (and if you are reading this and need help right now, please call the free maternal mental health hotline.)
And if you’ve ever wondered if what you are feeling is “enough” to ask for support, I want you to know that it is. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to talk with someone. This post shares local options and insight from therapists who are here to walk with you.
How do I hire a postpartum therapist in Oklahoma City?
Go their websites or social media and contact them! Reach out to a few – personality is so important in connecting with your therapist. Read through their Psychology Today listings and also their own websites. You want someone you feel comfortable with and can trust and know they will be there during the days you are stretched the most. Check their reviews.
Postpartum Mental Health Support and Therapy in OKC
Below you will find my list of the several postpartum mental health professions in OKC that serve mamas and their families in the greater area. Some are virtual only. Others virtually and in person. I personally reached out to these ladies, asked them questions, and have provided their answers below. I have listed them in random order with no specific preference given.
I’m Olivia Pham, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I earned my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University. My passion for maternal mental health grew from my own postpartum experience when I felt completely blindsided (even as a therapist) by the emotional whirlwind of postpartum. The anxiety was nonstop, intrusive thoughts were kept a secret, and the internal pressure to do everything perfectly was paralyzing. That deeply personal journey showed me how vital specialized support is during your most demanding and rewarding chapter of life.
My practice provides 100% virtual therapy just for Oklahoma moms, explicitly designed to meet the unique needs of motherhood in ways general therapy might miss. In our sessions, there’s no judgment, just honest, compassionate conversations about motherhood’s messy and challenging parts. Together, we’ll tackle the feelings of overwhelm, unpack worries and anxieties, and help you reconnect with the version of yourself that feels calm, steady, and even more intense struggles. These aron the typical baby blues. Trey re not things youn should power through alone. Working with a PMH-C trained therapist early on helps you work with your emotions, communicate your needs clearly with family, and gives you practical skills to feel steady and grounded.
Investing in therapy now, no matter your stage of motherhood, creates a positive ripple effect: it enhances your relationship with your baby, strengthens your connection with your partner, and gives you the emotional resilience to handle motherhood’s ups and downs. It’s not about becoming the best mom; it’s about becoming a mom who feels good in her own mind, heart, and body.
am Morgan Dillingham. I am a therapist, mom, wife, educator, sister, and so much more! I have a deep passion for helping others! I started out over 10 years ago as a school counselor, then as a school psychometrist and consultant, and licensed professional counselor. I currently and will probably always work in public schools in some capacity because I love it (particularly working with kids with different abilities and behavioral challenges!). I also have more recently (since becoming a mom!) found another passion and that is helping other moms navigate challenges of adjusting to motherhood, redefining themselves, finding support, navigating mental health struggles, etc. I am offering individual virtual therapy right now. I also hope to offer support groups throughout the year with the first group set to start later this fall.
Postpartum Support International (PSI) is a trusted resource for moms who are struggling after birth. Their message is simple and powerful: you are not alone, you are not to blame, and with help, you will get well. PSI offers a free, confidential helpline, online and local support groups, and a directory of providers who are trained in postpartum mental health. They also have coordinators here in Oklahoma who can connect you with resources close to home. If you are feeling anxious, sad, or just “off,” PSI is a safe place to reach out and start finding the support you need.
If you’re walking through postpartum depression, anxiety, or just don’t feel like yourself, please know you don’t have to go through it alone. Reaching out for help is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your family. You can connect with local Oklahoma City therapists listed here, or reach out to Postpartum Support International (PSI) for immediate guidance and resources.
I hope these were helpful in giving you a launch board for where to find the postpartum mental health support you need to help continue to make you the amazing mother that you are!
