Bluff Creek park Maternity Photo Session

Posted by Charis Elisabeth

Taking maternity photos is such a special part of pregnancy. I’m always so happy when someone inquires about a maternity session—and especially when I get to walk alongside them through pregnancy and into those newborn days when they choose my maternity/newborn package.

Maternity photos don’t have to be a big production. They don’t need to feel fancy or over-styled. It can simply be half an hour set aside to pause and document a season that’s both ordinary and monumental all at once.

This sweet session took place at Bluff Creek Park in Oklahoma City—a delightful spot for hiking, walking and of course photos!

Some of My Favorite Parts About Bluff Creek Park for Photos

Bluff Creek Park (Oklahoma City) is such a great spot for a maternity photo session. There’s variety built in—wooded trails, open grassy fields, and winding paths that photograph beautifully.

This session was in late winter, but with the golden hour light and that signature Oklahoma grass, the landscape still glowed. We lucked out with a warm February evening, which made being outside feel extra dreamy.

Whether you want a natural, earthy setting or just need an easily accessible peaceful outdoor space, Bluff Creek is a solid pick.

How to Choose a Location for Your Maternity Photo Session

When it comes to picking the right spot for maternity photos, definitely ask your photographer. We photographers all have our favorite places that fit our editing style, lighting preferences, and how we like to shoot. For my clients, I’m always happy to help choose a spot that feels just right. Here are a few things to think about:

The light. Lighting is huge for me—so I recommend locations based on how the light moves through the space and how it supports my natural editing style.

Is there a location that’s meaningful to you? A favorite trail, a park where you walk, somewhere you celebrated special moments.

What’s your vibe? Do you like open fields and flowy grass? Urban textures? A cozy studio setting?

Time of year. Some spots look best in spring but feel bare in winter. Others glow in the fall.

When to Do Your Maternity Photos

A big question I get asked: When should I schedule maternity photos? While every pregnancy is different, my general recommendation is between 28–32 weeks.

At that point, your belly is usually showing well, you’re likely still feeling fairly comfortable, and we can get your photos done in time for you to enjoy them before baby arrives. If it’s your first pregnancy and you’re not showing much, you might wait until closer to 34 weeks. But for mamas who’ve done this before, earlier (around 28 weeks) can be a better time to catch that sweet spot.

A Few Of My Favorite Benefits of Doing a Maternity Photo Session

  • A chance to slow down and reflect on this season.
  • Celebrate – soak in the beauty of pregnancy—even if you don’t always feel beautiful.
  • A keepsake your child can look back on one day.
  • It marks the transition—your family is about to grow, and that’s something worth remembering and celebrating!

Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, this season matters. You don’t need to be wearing a flowing gown or standing on a mountaintop to make it meaningful. A short, relaxed session can give you that little treasure chest to keep those memories for years to come.
