September

September in Oklahoma is a month of weather variety! The beginning of the month can start off with still a lot of heat and moves into beautiful evenings.

Pros of September – you can still have a summer feeling family photo session. We usually don’t have to worry alot about weather – rain or wind is usually not a big issue. Greenery is green and beautiful and often still lush feeling. Another plus of this month is schedules aren’t always really full so you have good flexibility. I honestly adore mid-end of September for family photos!

Cons of doing a September photo session – this month isn’t the best time for fall family photos if you really want a fall color look. You also might not be able to wear all your sweaters and tights without sweating buckets.

October

Aww October – crisp leaves, a pumpkin spice latte in hand, pumpkin patches, football in full swing. The month we generally think of as officially, “fall” or autumn.

Pros of a family photo session in October: we still have lots of nice weather. Especially for the first 3 weeks of the month we have nice temperatures which is a huge factor if you are doing photos with littles ones. Scenery can often still look pretty nice. You can dress up in all the great fall colors and sweaters and layers and feel comfy!

Cons for October – in Oklahoma you just never know when you will actually get fall colors. But the brown grass is usually coming out in force and can definitely give a fall look. You might hit a cold snap and freeze but that overall is quite rare.

November

November – the official fall month for Oklahoma and definitely the best time for fall family photos if fall colors are what you are going for. But remember with lifestyle family photography what is most important – the scenery? Nope, it’s you and your family that are the show pieces!

Pros of November for family photos – the colors can be quite pretty and fallish (at least as fallish as you can get for OKC :)) Generally the weather is quite pleasant with just a few super cold days here and there.

Cons for November family photos – the WIND. The extreme wind in the Oklahoma City area can really be a bummer for fall photo sessions. Again especially with little ones the super high winds we get in November can make it challenging. The further into November you choose for the date of your session, the more weather will play a factor. The crazy wind can mean for more chances of rescheduling.

At home sessions are an excellent choice to do in November where you have the flexibility of being inside but can also get some photos outside.

I hope this post about the best time for fall family photos is helpful as you choose what time works best for your family. It would be an honor to serve your family so reach out and let’s get your session on the schedule!
